专业概况

The plant biology graduate faculty is a diverse, active, collegial, and well-funded group representing vast research approaches in plant biology, from molecules to ecosystems. We engage in interdisciplinary research projects and collaborate with faculty members in many departments across NC State. Our plant biologists (including USDA-ARS scientists) can be found the Departments of Crop and Soil Sciences, Horticultural Science, Molecular and Structural Biochemistry, Entomology and Plant Pathology, and Forestry and Environmental Resources. We also have several associate faculty members from agricultural biotechnology companies located in the Research Triangle.

Our graduate students benefit from this wide scope of plant biology research at NC State and the broader research community at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Duke University. They have the opportunity to conduct research in diverse areas of contemporary plant biology such as plant genomics, cell biology, plant-microbe interactions, and conservation biology, among others.

A research degree for students interested in environmental consulting or natural resource inventory, or in management positions.

The Master of Science in Plant Biology (M.S.) is a research degree in which students must complete and defend a thesis. An M.S. degree in plant biology can be an intermediary step between the B.S. and the Ph.D. for students who do not have substantial undergraduate research experience or who are changing fields.

M.S. research training and coursework prepares students for positions in academia, industry, and government providing technical support, environmental consulting, and natural resource inventory and management.

M.S. Degree Requirements

Thirty (30) semester hours are required to earn the M.S. degree. Of those, 14-15 hours must be from the required courses for all plant biology students. One additional plant biology course at the 500-level or higher is also required. Other courses must be approved on the Graduate Plan of Work (GPOW). The Graduate School requires that an M.S. GPOW have at least 18 graded credit hours (many of which will be research hours). Complete and defend a thesis. The student works with his/her advisory committee to determine the scope of the thesis research. The committee conducts a final oral exam (defense) of the thesis, which the student must pass to earn his/her degree. Earn a minimum 3.0 GPA overall on graduate coursework at NC State. Enrolled in one credit or more the semester he/she applies to graduate. Must be continuously enrolled, and complete all degree requirements within six calendar years beginning with the date he/she starts courses carrying graduate credit applicable to the degree program. Meet with the DGP to discuss an appropriate advisor (if the student did not identify one during the admissions process). Consult with his/her advisory committee to prepare a Graduate Plan of Work by the end of the first semester. (DGP must approve the plan) Complete and submit an annual report to the DGP.
