Filmmakers and photographers bring ideas to life. Governors State’s Master of Fine Arts in Independent Film and Digital Imaging (IFDI) facilitates the development of your internal voice as a digital artist or filmmaker, helping you grow creatively, experiment with techniques, and reach your academic and artistic goals. The IFDI MFA program is dedicated to creating internationally-recognized films and photography that draw on evolving technology to celebrate diverse visions and voices, especially those currently underrepresented in media and film.

In this program, you will obtain specialized knowledge, creative development, and advanced technological skills in image-making and media production. You’ll receive guidance from faculty members who are experts in their fields, working professionals who will help you develop your voice and strengthen your craft. Hogtown, our most recent faculty-student film production, won Best Picture awards at three international film festivals, garnered strong reviews, and was named among the Top Ten Films of 2016 by a critic for The New York Times.

Delivery Format

Governors State’s 60-credit hour Independent Film and Digital Imaging MFA takes place in a state-of-the-art studio located entirely on campus where you will take part in every step of film-making, from writing a screenplay and directing cast members to full film production.

TOEFL score 550 on paper based with 54 on reading, 58 on writing, 55 on Listening, 213 on computer based with 21 on reading, 24 on writing, 21 on Listening and IBT score of 80 with 20 on reading, 20 on writing, 20 on Listening and 20 on speaking; Pearson Test of English PTE Exam score 53: Listening - 53; Speaking - 53; Reading - 53; Writing - 53.
