In today’s highly connected society, organizations seek employees who can communicate across a limitless and evolving range of platforms. With a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Governors State, students gain the knowledge and skills to communicate with a variety of audiences through advertising, media, and public relations, as well as in one-on-one communication, which drives organizational success, human relations, and improves conflict management.

Students may choose a concentration in Human Communication or Strategic Communication to specialize in their professional area of interest.

The Communication program is ranked #32 out of 522 colleges and universities for veteran friendliness in Illinois, as reviewed by College Factual.

Student Involvement and Success

In 2018, students in GSU’s American Advertising Federation (AAF) student chapter received fourth place in their division at the National Student Advertising Competition.

Communication students have secured internships with companies like Speedway Corporation, CBD Marketing, Milner Broadcasting Partners, the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association, and the Governors State University Foundation, just to name a few.

A bachelor’s degree in Communication provides you with a wide scope of career opportunities in private, public, and government sectors. Graduates of the program secure and build careers in professions such as advertising, consulting, customer service, digital marketing, human resources and training, media management, media writing, public affairs, public relations, and sales, leading to advanced positions such as Project Manager or Director of Communications.

Human Communication Concentration

Human communication skills are vital to organizations at every level, from the individual employee to the public at large. If you choose to concentrate in Human Communication, you will practice the theory and application of communicating with a wide range of audiences as you learn to influence and stabilize conditions by cultivating common ground.

Strategic Communication Concentration

Effective communication on a large scale requires a strategic plan to create a cohesive message. Professionals in areas such as advertising, digital marketing, journalism, media, and public relations use many platforms to reach an intended audience, and in the Communication program at GSU, you will work with the latest technology and platforms to be prepared for what’s next.

IELTS report with the minimum acceptable score of 6.0 academic version; TOEFL, a minimum acceptable score is as follows: 500 on paper based with 53 on reading, 54 on writing, 53 on Listening, 173 on computer based with 20 on reading, 21 on writing, 19 on Listening and IBT score of 68 with 19 on reading, 16 on writing, 18 on Listening and 15 on speaking; Pearson Test of English PTE score 47: Listening - 48; Speaking - 40; Reading - 51; Writing - 43.
