Advance your career

Our Master of Science in Journalism (MSJ) degree is designed to give you the skills and training needed to help you launch and accelerate your career in journalism and media. At Medill, you also join a network of more than 15,000 alumni working in journalism, media, communications and other industries all over the world.

The MSJ curriculum provides you with a solid foundation in the principles of modern journalism and then allows you the flexibility to select a specialization area that matches your interests and career goals. You'll also have the opportunity to take a few additional elective courses.

We often add new courses and revise course content to remain at the forefront of the rapidly changing journalism and media landscape. As such, our courses are subject to change.

Curriculum is by Specialization

Specializations allow you to tailor your learning to your career goals. Our curriculum varies by specialization to help you gain the skills needed for that area of study:

Health, Environment and Science Magazine Media Innovation and Content Strategy Politics, Policy and Foreign Affairs Social Justice and Investigative Reporting Sports Media Video and Broadcast

Specializations

As an MSJ student, you will select a specialization area that matches your career goals and interests. In addition to foundational MSJ courses, you will take classes specific to your specialization. All students select a specialization, and you will indicate which specialization you want to pursue on your application
