专业概况

在这里学什么？

The Elementary Teaching and Secondary Teaching concentrations at Northwestern will help you to become a skilled and knowledgeable teacher. These in-depth programs are widely respected for their emphasis on reflection, research, flexibility and lifelong learning. Course work will prepare you for a State of Illinois Professional Educator License, and you do not need prior teaching experience or a background in education to apply. The Elementary Teaching concentration includes all coursework necessary for an elementary endorsement to teach grades 1-6. The Secondary Teaching concentration includes all coursework necessary for both a middle grades (5-8) and high school (9-12) endorsement in a specific subject area.

Our students learn to become truly reflective educators who are able to continuously assess and improve their own professional practice.

Emphasis on the Social Contexts of Education

Effective teachers understand their students’ social and cultural contexts and the roles of schools in society. You will learn about the social contexts of education and have field experiences in both urban and suburban schools.

Faculty conduct courses in a collaborative environment that helps a diverse group of outstanding students best take advantage of the knowledge, insights and experiences of their peers.

Connecting Theory to Practice

Students benefit from a faculty comprised of remarkable teachers with decades of experience and researchers dedicated to improving learning. You will integrate theory with professional practice as you build your own philosophy of teaching.

Flexible Scheduling

Full-time students may complete the degree in one calendar year. Students may also pursue the degree part-time and begin the program in any academic quarter. Core courses except for student teaching meet once a week in the evenings to accommodate working students.
