The major in Spanish is designed to immerse students in the complexity and diversity of literary and intellectual traditions in Latin American and Iberian cultures while achieving fluency in the target language. Students are encouraged to focus on particular interests, such as literary and cultural history, Latino studies, Lusophone studies, race and ethnicity, film, cultural history and others.

Spanish is a language of business: Spanish is spoken in fast-growing world economies such as Argentina and Mexico. Here in the U.S., Latino consumers have been declared the fastest growing market segment. The Spanish-language television network Univision is the fifth largest network in the country.

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese offers courses in language, literature, and culture that speak to a variety of interests, whether focused on Latin American, Iberian, US Latino, Lusophone African traditions, or some aspect of literature, language, or culture that cuts across geographic divides. Instruction in most courses is in Spanish or Portuguese, and the development of fluency in reading, speaking, and writing the language is an important goal of courses at all levels. The major and minor programs offered in Spanish and Portuguese are flexible and depend on students’ initiative in pursuing particular interests within a framework of simple rules. Each student’s major or minor program is subject to the approval of an adviser. Students who study Spanish are encouraged to also study Portuguese.

为来自中国的学生设计 International applicants whose primary language is not English or whose secondary school curriculum has not been in English must submit exam results from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
