专业概况

The Master of International Studies (MIS) is a 36 credit, professional degree program that prepares students for exciting careers in government service, international institutions and non-governmental organizations.

These are the program objectives:

To enable students to attain substantive knowledge of international studies To enable students to develop professional skills for successful careers in international relations To enable students to develop intercultural communication skills To enhance the quality of the program

Objective: To enable students to attain substantive knowledge of international studies

Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge from four subject areas of International Relations theory, Comparative politics, International Law and Organizations, and International Political Economy to understanding a problem in international affairs. Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to produce original research and/or policy analysis on a substantive issue in international affairs. Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to consider multiple points of view and contradictory perspectives in analyzing a controversial topic in international affairs.

Objective: To enable students to develop professional skills for successful careers in international relations

Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to use a formal research design to make inferences based on evidence or data, and to assess the strengths and limitations of the research design employed. Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to orally present the main findings of a capstone research project or policy analysis in a professional setting. Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to present a professional research report or analytical paper using all the elements of proper style.

Objective: To enable students to develop intercultural communication skills

Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to use a language other than their language of birth at a level of proficiency that allows them to translate a professional document. Students are expected to demonstrate an ability to work professionally in another society, either by completing an extended study abroad program or working or interning abroad.

Program faculty are expected to attract quality students Program faculty are expected to promote diversity among students enrolled in the program Program faculty are expected to assure appropriate retention of students in the program and time to degree The program is expected to provide adequate financial assistance for students Program faculty are expected to enhance career development of students through internship program Program faculty are expected to enhance job placement of students
