Overview

This course will allow you to top up your existing qualifications to an honours degree in one year, while benefiting from all that Northumbria University has to offer. You’ll build on your all-round knowledge of business, adding expertise in accounting and finance as well as transferable professional and managerial techniques.

The course includes specialist modules that cover financial reporting analysis, strategic management accounting, and international financial management. The course provides an excellent foundation for jobs in finance, banking, government, and general business leadership.

What will I study?

The BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance degree, through a year of study in both core and specialist topics, builds to give you the Northumbria Graduate attributes. Throughout the year, you will become knowledge about the theory and practice of responsible business and management in an international context. This knowledge will be fostered through identification of contemporary professional accounting and finance practice in discipline specific modules, and cultivate an awareness of the cultural and ethical contexts within which international accounting and finance operates through problem based learning approaches.

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will be taught through a mix of lectures and seminars, though for the more technical aspects you will also attend computer-based workshops, totalling 9 hours per week. You will also be expected to engage in independent study involving directed and self-directed learning, around 40 hours per week.

Assessments take place through coursework only.

You’ll be taught by experienced lecturers and academics who use their industry experience to demonstrate how the theories you will learn translate in to real life situations.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research.

Each module will articulate through a teaching and learning plan a week-by-week diet of content, which will be supported by an eLearning portal, which will contain a variety of support and directed learning materials.

Careers and further study

At the end of this course, you could follow previous graduates into accounting and finance roles, including training contracts with leading accounting practices. Equally, you could move into a range of careers in business and management, both in the UK and around the world.

Completion of the core module, Academic and Career Development, will result in an independently prepared career plan for all students, including preparation of key employment documents such as application forms, cover letters and CVs.

Whatever you decide to do, you will have strong employability as a result of having acquired the characteristics of a Northumbria graduate. These include critical reflection and self-learning, collaboration and curiosity, and the ability to apply your knowledge to solve problems in ways that are sustainable and ethical.
